John Barry, a 'forty shilling' farmer was killed during a raid on his house in Grange, South Tipperary in
1827. Five men were hanged on the Green (common area) at Ardfinnan, for his murder. Four of these men
were probably innocent.
A number of families were evicted and their homes destroyed to the foundations because they spoiled
view between the Swiss Cottage and Cahir Castle.
The Wrens were a self-sufficient female 'colony' who ran their own affairs in County Kildare.
'forty shillin shame' weaves these three separate stories into a captivating feature film. As was the case last
year, the cast and crew are donating their services and time free of charge in true community spirit. Much of
the equipment, locations, sets, costumes etc. have been promised free gratis.
The cast for this film is almost double that of 'Race the Drop', includes over 40 children, the youngest of whom
is four month old Lily. Many of the performers are first-timers.
Rupert McCarthy is a very welcome addition to the crew and expands the boundaries of our parish well into County Cork. Rupert is highly experienced in all facets of film making and has an impressive CV.
We are again blessed to have Knocklofty House as base camp and location. We are delighted that P.J. O Neill of Sureprint Ltd. Clonmel has again dug deep into his pocket and was first on board with a large donation. We are privileged to have been allowed to film on the lands which are soon to become Marlbrook Hotel and Golfing Resort. We hope to be able to use at least two of the original locations relating to the 'John Barry story' ie. Clonmel Courthouse where the original trial took place, which has been restored to its former state, and the Green in Ardfinnan where the five unfortunate men were hanged.
